Youth Leadership Development Program

Purpose

The purpose of the Youth Leadership Development Program is to increase communication, awareness and understanding about the role of law enforcement in society today. How the Wheeling Police Department fulfills that role will be the topic of discussion throughout the Academy. 

What Is a Youth Leadership Development?

Modeled after our successful Citizens Police Academy, the Youth You Leadership Development is an educational program designed to give youth an inside view of municipal police work. The program combines classroom and practical exercises, with an emphasis having fun while learning.

Who Are the Instructors?

The instructors are Wheeling Police Officers who teach their own area of expertise. Each has years of training and real-life experience in their subject fields.

What Subjects Are Included?

     Week One:  Orientation and Tour

     Week Two:  Crime Scene Investigations

     Week Three:  Traffic Law and Vehicle Stops

     Week Four:  K9 Demonstration and Graduation 

Who Should Apply?

The Youth Leadership Development is open to Wheeling students entering 6th, 7th or 8th grade this fall. There are four Saturday morning class sessions, and each applicant must commit to attend all four class sessions.

Dates of Classes

Classes will be held on four consecutive Saturday mornings in April, from 9:00 a.m. to noon.

Parental consent is required to attend this free program. Interested students should complete application above and return it to the Wheeling Police Department Crime Prevention Unit. Participants will be notified upon selection for the program. For more information, please call 847-459-2645.

The Youth Leadership Development Program is offered at no cost to the participant. This program is made possible through the generosity of the Village of Wheeling Board of Trustees.
