Overview

On March 2, 2009, the Village of Wheeling approved an extended five-year exclusive franchise agreement with Waste Management for the collection of residential refuse, recycling and landscape waste. This extended agreement will be in effect on June 1, 2009.

If residents observe scavengers (person or company) other than Waste Management collecting or removing any refuse or recycling from any property, please contact the Police Department (Non-Emergency) at 847-459-2632.

The Village of Wheeling utilizes heavy duty wheeled carts. Each residence has been assigned one 96-gallon cart for refuse and one 64-gallon cart for recyclables, unless a larger or smaller cart is requested. Requests for containers must be made through Waste Management at (800) 796-9696. These carts are the property of the Village of Wheeling and are not to be removed from the residence.

Waste Management continues to provide regular weekly curbside collections for every single family, townhome/duplex and multi-family residential dwelling in the Village. Collections include refuse, including bulk items, and recycling. Landscape waste is collected on the same day as regular service from April 1 through November 30.

Important Guidelines

All carts and materials must be placed at the curb for collections no earlier than 5:00 PM the day before scheduled collection but by 6:00 am the day of scheduled collection.

All refuse must be placed inside the refuse cart with the lid completely closed for appropriate collections.

All empty carts or any refuse materials that were not collected must be removed from the curb by or before 8:00 AM the day after scheduled collections.

On days other than collection days, carts along with bulk items shall be kept in the garage or adjacent to a principal structure within the side or rear yard of any lot. No waste or carts can be stored in front of principal structure or within the front yard are of any single family lot.

If a regular collection falls on a holiday, collections will be delayed by one day, with Friday's collection taking place on Saturday.

Landscape waste must be placed in either 35-gallon durable plastic containers marked clearly with a red "X" around the body of the container OR placed in biodegradable Kraft paper bags.

Landscape waste in any plastic bag will not be accepted.

Landscape waste in cardboard boxes will not be accepted.
