One-Day Shredding & Electronics Recycling Event
2026 Document Destruction and Electronics Drop Off Event - Wheeling
The Village of Wheeling, with the Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County (SWANCC), is hosting a free annual Document Destruction and Electronics Recycling Drop Off Event on Saturday, May 2, 2026, from 9 am to noon at Public Works, 77 W. Hintz Road. Residents from Wheeling and SWANCC member communities are eligible to participate. IDs will be checked for verification of residency.
The only items that will be collected are documents for shredding and electronics that are listed in the accepted list. No other items will be collected or accepted.
Drop-Off Procedure:
- All items must be placed in the trunk of the vehicle prior to entering the event.
- Participants will be asked to unlock their trunk to allow a service attendant to unload the acceptable items.
- Participants are not allowed to exit or park their vehicle after entering the onsite event.
- For the safety of staff, please keep pets at home. If a pet is present in the vehicle, the participant is responsible for holding pet back while staff unloads items.
- Items not on the accepted list will be returned to the participant who will be responsible for proper disposal. This event will only collect the accepted list of documents and electronics per requirements.
How to Prepare Documents for Destruction:
- There is a limit of six (6) paper bags or small (file-sized) boxes. Cardboard boxes will be emptied onsite and returned to residents to recycle. The Village will not dispose of any boxes.
- No documents will be accepted from businesses, schools, institutions, or non-SWANCC residents.
- Paper must be dry, clean, and loose.
- Remove plastic sleeves /spines /covers /binders /folders.
- Remove metal or plastic clips including paperclips and binder clips (small staples are okay).
- DON'T bring paper in plastic bags. Use paper shopping bags or small boxes.
- DON’T include photos, slides, negatives, hardcover books, or store receipts.
- DON’T include expired plastic credit cards or cases for checks.
Accepted Documents:
- Bank statements
- Financial planning statements
- Medical history forms
- Retired tax documents
- Documents with personal information, such as social security numbers
Unaccepted Documents:
Recycle these items in your curbside cart!
- Magazines
- Junk mail
- Ads or coupons
- Newspapers
Electronic Recycling:
- There is a limit of seven (7) items per household.
- No electronics will be accepted from businesses, schools, institutions, or non-SWANCC residents.

- Computer monitors
- Computers (desktop, notebooks, tablets)
- Converter boxes
- Fax machines
- Keyboards
- MP3 Player
- Potable Digital Assistants (PDAs)
- Printers (incl. multi-function printers)
- Satellite receivers
- Scanners
- Televisions (all types)
- Video game consoles
- Video recorders/players
- Zip Drives
- Mice
Unaccepted Electronics:
These items may be placed in the garbage if they cannot be donated for reuse or recycled by other resources.
- No microwaves
- No toasters
- No blenders
- No coffee makers
- No vacuum cleaners
- No lamps
- No radio or stereo equipment
- No speakers
