Household Batteries

Batteries are useful and convenient sources of power but can create challenges, such as fire hazards and release toxic chemicals into soil and water that can pollute ecosystems.

Effective January 1, 2026, Illinois law requires all household batteries to be recycled, and battery manufacturers to fund battery collections with no cost to the consumer. The law applies to primary cell batteries, which are single use, non-rechargeable (e.g. AA, AAA, C, D, 9v, small disc or button); secondary cell batteries, which are rechargeable (e.g. lithium-ion, lead acid, nickel-metal hydride); and, medium format batteries such as e-bike, e-scooter and certain outdoor tools.

Medical device batteries, automotive batteries, large electric car batteries, solar or home energy storage batteries, and any battery that is not easily removeable, such as some smartphones, tablets, or large electronics, require other disposal options such as auto part or dealer retailers, battery manufacturers, telecommunication service companies, or computer companies.

The Village of Wheeling is not a drop-off location for any batteries. However, residents can easily recycle batteries at a variety of locations. For a drop-off location near Wheeling, please visit:  https://batterynetwork.org/stewards/state-recycling-laws/illinois/

Never place batteries of any kind in curbside recycling or trash!
