Chicken Coop Permit Requirements

The Village of Wheeling requires a permit for the installation and construction of residential chicken coops. The following information outlines permit submittal requirements, construction standards, zoning regulations, and inspection requirements.

Permit Submittal Requirements

The following items must be submitted prior to permit issuance:

  • Completed permit application

  • Signed contract including a clear scope of work

  • Plat of Survey showing property lines, setbacks, and the proposed location of the coop and run

  • Illinois Department of Agriculture Livestock License

  • Construction drawings for the proposed structure

Construction Requirements

All chicken coops must meet the following standards:

  • A covered enclosure shall be provided for housing hens

  • The coop structure shall not exceed twelve (12) square feet

  • A running area of at least six (6) square feet per hen is required

  • The combined total area of the coop and run shall not exceed one hundred (100) square feet

  • Coops must be constructed of durable, weather‑proof materials

  • Walls must be insulated and the structure shall be covered with an insulated blanket

  • Rodent control measures are required

  • No electricity is permitted in the structure, including heat lamps

Zoning Requirements

Chicken coops must comply with the following zoning standards:

  • Maximum roof height shall not exceed eight (8) feet

  • For pitched roofs, height shall be measured from the midpoint of the roof

  • Coops must be located a minimum of ten (10) feet from rear and side lot lines

  • Coops must be located at least ten (10) feet from any residence

  • Coops are not permitted in front yards or street‑facing yards

Additional Requirements

  • Roosters are prohibited

  • All areas where hens are kept must be clean and well‑maintained, with minimal accumulation of waste

  • If the applicant is not the property owner, a notarized letter of permission from the homeowner is required

Required Inspections

The following inspections are required as part of the permit process:

  • Post hole inspection

  • Final inspection, including verification of rodent control measures
