Temporary Structure Permit Requirements
Temporary structures are permitted within the Village of Wheeling subject to the requirements and limitations outlined below. Structures that do not meet these conditions may be classified as permanent structures and will be required to comply with all applicable codes and ordinances.
Temporary Structures
The following items, along with the stated restrictions, are considered temporary structures:
Construction trailers (must be placed on the active construction site)
Sales trailers (must be placed on the site under development)
Storage trailers to be used only for remodeling or building expansion projects
The building or space being remodeled or expanded must have an active construction permit
Tents or trailers for special events
Submittal Requirements
The following items must be submitted prior to permit issuance:
Completed Building Permit Application
Plat of Survey or Site Plan showing:
Proposed location of the temporary structure
Size of the structure
Method of power supply, if applicable
A letter stating:
The intended use of the temporary structure
The date the structure will be placed on site
The date the structure will be removed from the site
Acknowledgement within the letter that if the temporary structure remains beyond the approved time limit, the owner of both the property and the structure will be in violation of the Municipal Code of the Village of Wheeling, unless written approval for a time extension is granted
Extensions may be granted once only and shall not exceed 180 days
Exception – Temporary Tent Structures
An exception to the standard requirements may be granted for a temporary tent structure with a duration of one week. In such cases, the following must be submitted:
Completed Building Permit Application (PDF) indicating the dates the tent will be installed and removed
A letter stating the intended use of the tent and the installation and removal dates
Certification that the tent is constructed of flame-retardant material or has been treated with a flame-retardant substance
Plat of Survey or Site Plan showing the proposed location of the tent
A letter from the property owner stating the intended use of the tent and whether food or alcoholic beverages will be served
Electricity
If electricity is required, the submittal must indicate how power will be supplied to the temporary structure, such as through extension cords, temporary generators, or other approved means.
**Additional permits may be required.
Permanent Structures
Temporary structures that do not meet the conditions or time limitations outlined above will be considered permanent structures and must comply with all zoning, building, and code requirements applicable to permanent construction.
